Contrechamps gathers seven works that Adrian Moore composed between 2006 and 2010, all made after his previous release Rêve de l’aube. The title sums up his basic approach to transformation: he identifies the most prominent features of a sound and chooses processes that react against them. Convolution, colouring one sound with another or animating pitched material, runs through the whole disc, as does a concern with pitch and rhythmic pulse that he traces back to Junky (1996) and Dreaming of the Dawn (2004). The surround works were conceived in 5.1 or 7.1 from the start.
Fields of Darkness and Light, commissioned and premiered in Leeds in 2010 by the violinist Darragh Morgan, sets the violin over a sequence of 13 chords. There is no live processing: the tape part is broken into 100 fragments triggered by a computer performer, so soloist and computer play as an ensemble. It won first prize in the mixed category at Musica Nova 2010 in Prague. 3Pieces began as electroacoustic interludes for a horn trio project and grew into three abstract works on recordings of piano, horn and violin, shaped with a graphics tablet used as a performance instrument; thanks go to Tom James (horn) and Peter Cropper (violin).
Surface, composed in 7.1 and heard in a 5.1 version from 2010, builds a dark “plausible sonic environment” from small objects in three-dimensional space, borrowing ideas from object-oriented programming and from Denis Smalley’s writing on space. Rococo Variations decorates a melancholic 8-bar harmonic passage with synthetic glissandi, granulation and convolution, while Sustain set out as a relaxed, dreamlike piece and turned brutal once wind noise entered it.
Born in Nottingham in 1969, Adrian Moore discovered electroacoustic music at a concert by Smalley, studied at City University in London and then with Jonty Harrison in Birmingham, composing for BEAST. He is Reader in Music at the University of Sheffield and director of the University of Sheffield Sound Studios.

Release notes
The title for this disc — Contrechamps — attempts to sum up how I view my most basic approach to sound transformation. Often, when I hear a sound, I identify a number of features. These features are usually prominent because they tend towards one end of a spectrum. My choice of transform is often determined by the need to react against these features and I have learned what processes work well in these situations. This process helps me tag sounds and transformations so that my composition…

“The Atrium is a fantastic venue for certain kinds of music and electroacoustic performance definitely gains something extra special from the sheer vastness of its acoustic.”
