Norwegian guitarist Håvard Volden (12-string guitar, objects) and Japanese master Toshimaru Nakamura (no-input mixing board) recorded these two pieces in Norway in 2008, creating what one Norwegian reviewer calls "a timbre based album with some auditory surprises." The music is "slow and quiet, with contrasting elements. A cutting tone, a crackling flicker, or a deep bass tone gives the progress colour. It is exciting to listen to an expression that moves with this much unpredictability."

Norman Records observes that Nakamura is "of course an absolute maestro with his ghostly electrical currents, and Volden is no slouch: what is fascinating is that the two instruments, enormously different as they are, are sometimes indistinguishable."

One reviewer notes there's "some great powerful playing going on here. Nakamura is adrift here with his no input mixer, layering a firm foundation of buzzing, ringing and crackling sounds. Volden plays his guitar with the objects, subtracting an interesting range of odd tones from the 12 strings. Bowing, plucking and hitting become a steady stream here that goes along fine with the stream of consciousness sounds from Nakamura."

Thomas Millroth in Sound of Music offers a Swedish perspective, noting that "Volden creates a mirror-smooth surface through his beautiful playing with small wave murmurs that form a horizon line in Nakamura's expressive landscape." He adds that "for me remains in the end the impression of a well-formulated guitarist of great integrity together with an uncouth and interesting sound companion, who doesn't stick to the rules a single time. That makes the disc irresistible. Although bitwise boring, which is equal to conventional, but this boredom runs parallel to Nakamura's manic grater efforts. Livingly alive in its many broken surfaces."

The Norwegian reviewer emphasizes that "the sound of Håvard Volden's tabletop guitar is manipulated beyond recognition, while the strings vibrate in a traditional style. The sound can be perceived as cool, but it is a coolness of refreshing quality and a substance leaving the listener with a warm impression."

Part of Another Timbre's Guitar Series, Crepuscular Rays demonstrates how acoustic and electronic can merge into a single sonic entity—music where the source matters less than the compelling interplay of timbres and textures.
