John Coltrane personally pushed Impulse! to sign Albert Ayler, and then told them to record him live, which turned out to be the single best piece of A&R advice of the decade. Cut at the Village Vanguard and the Village Theatre across the winter of 1966 and 1967, In Greenwich Village catches Ayler's band at maximum size and maximum intensity: Donald Ayler on trumpet playing bugle calls from some imaginary funeral, cello and bass sawing underneath, marches and hymns and nursery melodies torn apart and reassembled at enormous volume. It is generally reckoned his best record for the label and it is very hard to argue.
