The Fence (LP)

Label: B & C Records

Format: LP

Genre: Jazz

Out of stock

Original UK edition on B & C Records of the 1970 soul jazz fusion album featuring Keith Tippett.

condition (record/cover): NM / VG+ (edges wear and sticker on front)

Pink pouch intact but no balloon.

Two bassists from very different camps share this record: Danny Thompson of Pentangle on double bass, and Rick Grech of Blind Faith on bass guitar. Harold McNair had played alongside Grech that same year in Ginger Baker's Air Force, and Pentangle's drummer Terry Cox completes a rhythm section recorded at Sound Techniques in Chelsea, with Sandy Roberton producing for B & C in 1970.

McNair plays flute, saxophone and an electric sax over two pianists, Keith Tippett and Alan Branscombe, with Colin Green on guitar and Tony Carr on percussion. Only the title piece is his own composition. The rest is long-form jazz-rock on borrowed material: Grech's True Love Adventure, the traditional Early In The Morning stretched to twelve minutes, Scarborough Fair in Paul Simon (!)'s arrangement, and almost thirteen minutes of the Beatles (!)' Here, There And Everywhere.
