Luc Ferrari (1929 to 2005) was a French composer, best known for his tape music and for what he called anecdotal music, in which recorded everyday life enters the piece without being disguised. Born in Paris, he travelled to the United States in 1954 to meet Edgard Varèse, whose Déserts he had heard on the radio, and in 1958 joined Pierre Schaeffer's Groupe de Recherches Musicales. Hétérozygote (1964) already let recognisable sounds into concrete music; Presque rien No. 1 (1970), a day on a Yugoslav beach edited down to twenty one minutes, became a classic of its kind.
