Saint-Paul-de-Vence, July 1970: Albert Ayler's last documented concerts, played in the sculpture-garden light of the Fondation Maeght and released on the great French experimental label Shandar - home of La Monte Young, Terry Riley and other essential outsiders, which tells you how the French understood this music. The playing is urgent, stripped down and deeply moving, and knowing what came only months later makes every phrase land twice as hard. But sentiment aside, the music stands entirely on its own: focused, generous, alive. A cornerstone of any serious Ayler shelf, and one of the noblest catalog entries on one of the noblest labels of the era.
