Iannis Xenakis wrote Oresteia in 1966 for an open-air production of Aeschylus's trilogy in Ypsilanti, Michigan, setting the ancient Greek text for mixed choir, children's choir and a small ensemble of winds and percussion. The choral writing is raw and percussive, with shouts and hard unisons, and the instruments mostly punctuate.
Ensemble Ars Nova is conducted by Marius Constant, with the Ensemble Vocal Stéphane Caillat and the Maîtrise de Notre-Dame de Paris, in the first recording of the work, originally issued in 1970. This is the late 1970s Erato reissue.
