Milestone Reissue! The three discs collected here - housed in a lavish cardboard boxet (+ Includes a 116 page booklet in French and English with biographical notes, essays and program notes for each work, and a 52 page booklet with photographs) - cover the bulk of Pierre Schaeffer's concrète works, beginning with his pre-tape days when he composed using multiple turntables mixing sound effects recordings direct to lathe. The earliest recordings here were created in 1948 during Schaeffer's days as radio engineer for Radiodiffusion Française and are built from sounds ranging from locomotives and whirligigs to pots, pans, piano, and percussion. Each of those collages eventually made their way onto the air. His Suite pour 14 instruments is an amalgam of orchestral sounds rendered far beyond their original context. Where these early works clearly function as experiments for Schaeffer, once Pierre Henry joins in as his assistant, the music takes on both a playfulness and a refinement of detail that eventually became landmarks of the French approach to musique concrète. The processes became increasingly laborious, and those who once flocked to Schaeffer's studio to work in this new medium became disillusioned by the demand and patience that the work required.

Year: 2010
Notes:

Packaging: each CD housed in an individual cardsleeve. Includes a 116 page booklet in French and English with biographical notes, essays and program notes for each work, and a 52 page booklet with photographs. This edition adds 'Continuo' (track 3-8), which is absent from the previous editions. • Suite pour quatorze instruments: the original version from 1949 consisted of five movements. The version on this CD is the composer's own 1971 revision, with the collaboration of François Bayle, reduced to three movements. • Symphonie pour un homme seul: the original version comprises 22 movements, for a total length of approximately 80 minutes. In 1951, it was reduced by Pierre Henry to twelve movements, lasting 21 minutes and 22 seconds. A copy remastered in 2009 is presented on the CD. • Orphée 53: After the listening to the only remaining copies of "Orphée 51" and "Orphée 53", Pierre Henry did not wish that all or part of these two works be published here. He considered the sound as "too deteriorated" in comparison with the original and proposed a new work by exclusively working over the rough sounds again, created by him and that he had preserved in his sound library. This new work does not contain the libretto written by Pierre Schaeffer and replaces "Échos d'Orphée" published in the previous sold-out releases. This "Suite de concert" was executed in March 2010 at Studio Son/Ré, based on the original sounds from "Orphée 53", composed by Pierre Henry at Studio d'Essai de la R.T.F. in 1953.
