Edition Lockenhaus is a five-CD box that ECM New Series issued in July 2011 for the 30th anniversary of the chamber music festival Gidon Kremer started in the Austrian village of Lockenhaus in 1981. It opens with two previously unreleased festival performances from 2001 and 2008. The other four discs bring back the long out-of-print double albums Edition Lockenhaus Vol. 1 & 2 (1985) and Vol. 4 & 5 (1988).
Kremer founded the festival with the local priest Josef Herowitsch, and Manfred Eicher began recording it early on. From 1985 the tapes appeared as the Edition Lockenhaus, with Kremer and Eicher as producers. Disc one has Kremerata Baltica under Sir Simon Rattle in 2001 and under Roman Kofman in 2008. The archive discs, recorded between 1981 and 1986, gather players such as Kim Kashkashian, Thomas Zehetmair, Heinz Holliger and others, many of them near the start of careers later bound to ECM. Kremer's own summary: "The artistic atmosphere in Lockenhaus soon has everybody speaking on the same wavelength."
Richard Strauss's Metamorphosen, a study for 23 solo strings, is played with Kremer among the violins and Rattle conducting. Messiaen's Trois petites Liturgies de la Présence Divine follows, with the Shchedryk children's choir from Kiev, ondes Martenot, celesta, vibraphone, piano and percussion. Disc two pairs Franck's Piano Quintet in F minor with Caplet's Conte fantastique, a harp quintet after Poe's The Masque of the Red Death, and two Poulenc songs. Disc three opens with Janáček's first quartet, after Tolstoy's Kreutzer Sonata, then turns to Stravinsky and Shostakovich. Disc four holds Shostakovich's Quartets Nos. 13 and 14. Disc five is devoted to Erwin Schulhoff, ending with the Cinq Études de Jazz for piano.
In the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Gerhard Rohde noted that the set does not try to survey Kremer's Lockenhaus years completely, aiming instead to keep the spirit of the place and the variety of its programmes. On BR Klassik, Oswald Beaujean recalled the 2001 Strauss as one of the festival's great nights and heard the Messiaen as a moving document of confidence in dark times.
This is the limited five-CD box on ECM New Series, catalogue number ECM New Series 2190-94, released on 15 July 2011. It belongs to the Old & New Masters series, which gathers earlier ECM recordings in box sets. The 60-page booklet has the original liner notes, a conversation between Kremer and Wolfgang Schreiber, and new essays.
