Four pieces by John Cage in versions for double bass by Joëlle Léandre, who worked with him from the late 1970s. In The Wonderful Widow Of Eighteen Springs (1942), on a text from Joyce's Finnegans Wake, and in the wordless A Flower (1950), Léandre sings and plays at once, while 59½ (1953) is the short work for any string instrument.
The long centre of the disc is Ryoanji, where the bass traces slow glissandi against the sparse strokes of Lê Quan Ninh's percussion. Léandre closes with her own tape piece Hommage À J… (1984). Recorded at Sender Freies Berlin in 1995 and issued by Montaigne.
