From 1972 to 1982 Tom Johnson, composer of The Four Note Opera, reviewed concerts for The Village Voice, and for much of that decade he was one of the few critics in New York writing regularly about the downtown scene. This book gathers those columns in chronological order, so the reader follows minimalism, sound installation and new performance practice as they appeared week after week in lofts, galleries and small halls.
The pieces are short, clear and often funny, written by someone who listened closely and described what he heard rather than what he expected. Reich, Glass, Young, Lucier, Oliveros, Niblock and dozens of others pass through the pages. Published by Het Apollohuis in Eindhoven in 1989.
Articles on Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Terry Riley, La Monte Young, Charlemagne Palestine, David Tudor, John Cage, Alvin Lucier, Robert Ashley, Devid Behrman, Godon Mumma, Frederic Rzewski, Phill Niblock, Meredith Monk, Charles Dodge, Joel Chadabe, M.E.V., Pauline Oliveros, Julius Eastman, Maryanne Amacher, Alison Knowles, Morton Feldman, Takehisa Kosugi, Akio Suzuki, Harry Bertoia, Giacinto Scelsi, Luc Ferrari, Laurie Spiegel, Mauricio Kagel, Rhys Chatham and many, many others.
