The German birdsong record is a national institution with its own history, from the shellac era to the LP, and Electrola's Columbia imprint issued this survey of native songbirds in the sixties: thrushes, warblers, the nightingale, each announced by a narrator and given a minute or two to sing. The recordings are clean, the species well chosen, and the sleeve has the pedagogical calm of a nature documentary from the same decade.

For our purposes these records are the ancestors of the field-recording scene, and the German ones are especially well made. German Columbia, 1C 048 series.
